Role Overview

As a Staff Software Engineer on Stripe's Core Ledger and Payments team, you will design systems that move hundreds of billions of dollars each year. You will lead architectural decisions that guarantee double-entry accounting correctness, zero financial loss, and five-nines (99.999%) availability under unprecedented global transaction volumes.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect and evolve immutable, distributed financial ledgers and settlement pipelines handling massive throughput.
• Drive long-term technical roadmaps, mentor senior engineers, and uphold rigorous engineering standards across Stripe's core infrastructure.
• Design failover protocols and multi-region active-active architectures that guarantee idempotency and consistency during network partitions.
• Collaborate with banking partners and card networks to integrate emerging payment rails while abstracting away regional complexities.

Qualifications & Experience

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with a track record of architectural leadership.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems, transactional consistency, relational database design (PostgreSQL, Spanner), and event-driven architectures.
• Strong programming skills in languages such as Ruby, Java, Go, or Rust.
• Experience managing critical systems where failure is not an option (finance, health, security).

Compensation & Benefits

• Base Salary: $230,000 – $350,000 per year + substantial Stripe stock grants (RSUs).
