Staff Systems Engineer, AI Supercomputing & GPU Infrastructure

Role Overview & Mission

Anthropic is building frontier AI systems like Claude that are reliable, interpretable, and steerable. We are looking for a Staff Systems Engineer to design, scale, and optimize the high-performance computing clusters that power our model training and inference pipelines. You will work at the intersection of bare-metal hardware, high-speed InfiniBand fabrics, and cutting-edge deep learning frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect and maintain ultra-reliable supercomputing fabrics composed of tens of thousands of Hopper and Blackwell GPUs.
• Optimize collective communication libraries (NCCL, MPI) and low-latency network interconnects for maximum FLOP utilization and training throughput.
• Build automated health detection, straggler mitigation, and rapid checkpoint restoration mechanisms to minimize MTTR during training failures.
• Design next-generation storage caching architectures capable of saturating petabyte-scale streaming datasets without I/O bottlenecks.
• Partner with researchers to identify infrastructure bottlenecks and co-design distributed training primitives.

Qualifications & Experience

• 7+ years of experience in systems engineering, high-performance computing (HPC), or large-scale distributed infrastructure.
• Deep proficiency in systems programming with Rust, C++, or Go, along with Python scripting.
• Extensive knowledge of Linux kernel tuning, RDMA, RoCE/InfiniBand networking, and PCIe topology.
• Experience running large-scale Kubernetes clusters or specialized cluster orchestrators (Slurm, Ray) at cloud scale.

Preferred Skills

• Experience diagnosing hardware degradation and thermal throttling across multi-node GPU systems.
• Direct contributions to open-source deep learning compilers or network acceleration libraries.

• Base Salary: $280,000 – $420,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
