About the OpenAI Research Internship

OpenAI's Research Internship program offers undergraduate, Master's, and PhD students the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge machine learning research alongside world-class mentors. You will contribute to our mission of ensuring artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.

What You Will Do

• Work on high-priority research problems across foundation model pre-training, fine-tuning, reasoning, or alignment.
• Run experiments across thousands of GPUs, analyzing empirical behaviors and proposing novel model enhancements.
• Collaborate directly with leading AI scientists and engineers who author state-of-the-art publications and production models.
• Present your research findings to the broader OpenAI research community at the conclusion of the internship.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD program in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Mathematics, or a related field.
• Demonstrated coding proficiency in Python and deep learning frameworks (PyTorch or JAX).
• Strong foundation in linear algebra, probability, calculus, and machine learning fundamentals.
• Prior research experience, competitive programming achievements, or significant open-source machine learning contributions.

• Competitive hourly compensation (equivalent to $120,000 – $150,000 annualized).
