ROLE OVERVIEW
In the role of Counsel, the employee will be responsible for the following:
- Advise on regulations relevant to investment management regimes in countries throughout Asia, including Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan
- Lead all general corporate matters in the Asia region (e.g., entity formation, drafting governance documents, resolutions, etc.)
- Work with business stakeholders on Asia market access (including, e.g., QFII, JSCC cleared products, power and gas contracts traded in Japan and Australia, etc.)
- Assist with the negotiation of trading documentation with trading counterparties and prime brokers; facilitate trading capabilities on various exchanges in Asia
- Perform research, provide insight and make recommendations based on best practices
- Work with the Legal Team to review and interpret international, national and local laws and regulations
- Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work both independently and in a highly collaborative environment, with good judgment regarding when to elevate issues
- Provide direct support to the General Counsel and the broader Legal and Compliance Department
- Review and respond to legal inquiries raised by business units or departments
- Coordinate AML/KYC onboarding with Asia-based trading counterparties
- Personal interactions with all levels of the business
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
In order to effectively represent the Company and communicate with clients, the employee must be someone who has:
- Regulatory experience preferred
- Derivatives/trading document experience not required but is a plus
- Private transaction experience a plus but not required
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as negotiation experience
- Practical experience with legal matters in financial services industry is preferred
- Strong desire to work collaboratively with the team
- Maintains a high standard of professionalism in all dealings with internal staff and any external partners, clients and regulatory agencies
- Problem solving skills and ability to identify and implement appropriate solutions
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects concurrently to meet/exceed deadline
- Consistent work ethic through hard work, confidence and effort
- Outstanding attention to detail and strong organization skills
EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:
- JD & 12+ years of legal experience required
- Prior experience in financial services industry a plus
- Hedge fund and registered investment advisor experience strongly preferred
- Relevant mainland China experience is a plus
- Proficiency in one or more Asian languages would be preferred as the role would require working on regional legal matters
