The Principal Systems Engineer will work in the Engines and MEMS (EMEMS) Sensors design department supporting the team in developing highly reliable products which meet customer specified requirements/expectations at the lowest competitive cost. The engineer will be a highly motivated self-starter who will be capable of providing technical leadership to complex, multi-discipline projects, providing mentoring to other engineers, and driving innovation. The engineer will be expected to represent the organization as a prime customer contact on existing products and new designs, including making presentations to customers.
In this high visibility role, the Principal Systems Engineer will coordinate with a cross-functional design team of hardware, software, and test engineers. This role interfaces with design engineers, operations, quality, program management, business development, and customers to establish requirements for new programs, execute existing developments, and support in-service products. The candidate should have skills and experience in the major disciplines of systems engineering: modeling and simulation, systems architecture development, requirements development/management, and validation and verification.
What You Will Do:
Confidently provide clear, concise communications with peers and Collins leadership.
Pursue cost saving opportunities to maximize project profitability.
Monitor and assess system issues; develop resolutions to meet productivity, quality, and customer-satisfaction goals and objectives.
Interact with internal and external customers.
Participate in the new product design cycle with engineering teams, including presenting at design reviews.
Establishing and adhering to schedules and budget for system engineering activities.
Gather and evaluate customer and industry specifications/requirements based on understanding of domain and technology.
Providing system-level engineering expertise and technical leadership to a cross-functional engineering team, from requirements definition through detailed design implementation and verification.
Participation in architecture trade studies, modeling/analysis/simulation, component failure mode and effects analysis, and safety analysis.
Performing statistical and qualitative analyses of data sets.
Leading and/or supporting system-level functional, performance, and robustness testing.
Supporting compliance to SAE ARP4754, or other guidelines, for development of aircraft systems as required.
Perform analysis at all levels of the total system product including concept, design, fabrication, modeling, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal.
Perform technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems.
Consider and evaluate alternatives accounting for similar metrics.
Manage configuration process, perform functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.
Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints.
Perform architectural exploration.
Decompose customer specifications and system level requirements into sub-system and piece part requirements and generates verification criteria and plans for the requirements.
Qualifications You Must Have:
Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience
Demonstrated technical and leadership responsibility on electronic development and integration programs.
Demonstrated ability to prepare and present stage gate design reviews both internally and externally to customers
Demonstrated excellent communication skills with the ability to facilitate teamwork across functions.
Prior experience managing and coordinating hardware and software development configurations throughout the engineering process.
Prior experience establishing design work scope content for concepts, criteria, and engineering efforts for product development, integration, and test.
Demonstrated ability with conflict resolution and negotiating skills.
Qualifications We Prefer:
Strong experience in design practices with consideration for system-level performance and aerospace certification requirements including SAE ARP4754, RTCA/DO-178, RTCA/DO-254, and RTCA/DO-160 preferred.
Experience with DOORS, Polarion ALM, and MATLAB/Simulink/StateFlow strongly desired.
Experience with engine technologies, aircraft systems and data management, embedded HW/SW, Agile development processes, or cybersecurity a plus.
10+ years experience reviewing product specifications and determining design requirements and scope of work.
10+ years experience performing estimates of effort and duration for tasks.
10+ years experience of requirements management and convergence planning.

The salary range for this role is 107,500 USD - 204,500 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
