The Opportunity
Build the future of transit with us.
Across Canada, WSP is delivering the communications, systems, and digital infrastructure that power safer, smarter, and more connected rail networks. As a Senior Communications Design Specialist, you’ll shape major transit projects from concept through commissioning—bringing systems engineering, system integration, and cybersecurity principles to life on the ground.
Your Impact
- Lead the design of complex communications systems, including fibre backbone networks, CCTV, Access Control, Public Address, telephony, passenger signage, radio, intrusion detection, fare systems, SCADA, and master clock solutions.
- Develop and review technical design deliverables such as layouts, risers, elevations, schedules, wiring diagrams, and fibre termination diagrams.
- Oversee and approve technical documentation, including specifications, reports, calculations, test plans, test procedures, and test reports to ensure compliance with project requirements.
- Apply systems engineering, systems integration, and assurance principles to communications designs for large rail infrastructure projects.
- Incorporate cybersecurity standards into system architecture and ensure designs meet relevant rail cyber requirements.
- Support construction and commissioning activities, including T&C, site visits, as-built reviews, and field issue resolution.
- Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary design teams, BIM specialists, and discipline leads to deliver fully integrated solutions.
- Provide technical leadership on LRT, subway, transit hub, and rail yard projects through all phases.
The Skills That Set You Apart
- A well-rounded background in rail communications systems, with 8–10 years of experience designing and delivering complex systems on large transit infrastructure projects.
- An engineering degree in a relevant discipline, with P.Eng. designation considered highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of IP-based networking and the full suite of rail communications systems, including SCADA, fibre networks, CCTV, passenger announcement (PA), radio, and access control.
- Demonstrated experience applying systems engineering, system integration, and assurance principles across multidisciplinary rail projects.
- Working knowledge of rail cybersecurity standards (e.g., CISSP, GICSP, IEC 62443) is considered a strong asset.
- Proven ability to interpret, review, and develop technical documentation—design packages, reports, specifications, and test documentation—with precision and clarity.
