Surface Water Engineer (Early Career) – Brisbane
What if you could do the kind of work the world needs?
At WSP, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to landmark projects, connect with leading specialists, and build a career shaped by your curiosity and ambition. Our culture encourages new ideas, diverse perspectives and practical innovation, giving you the support to do meaningful work from the start.
If you’re ready to make a real impact, we’re looking for a passionate Surface Water Engineer to join our Bridges, Aviation and Roads team and help deliver smarter, more sustainable infrastructure solutions across Queensland.
As part of our Transport & Infrastructure Group, you’ll help design safer and more resilient drainage systems for roads, rail and aviation projects. From highways to airports, your work will help connect communities and improve infrastructure resilience across the state.
About the Role
You’ll work on landmark projects in the Road and Rail sectors, plus a mix of smaller projects that will help you build a breadth of experience across hydrology and hydraulic modelling, as well as exposure to drainage design and water quality. With major transport infrastructure wins already under our belt, now’s the time to join a team that’s shaping Queensland’s infrastructure future.
This role is based in our Brisbane office, where you’ll be supported by experienced flooding and drainage engineers while developing your technical capability in hydrology, hydraulic modelling and surface water design.
You will be:
Supporting hydrological assessments and surface water modelling for civil infrastructure projects.
Building, running and interpreting hydrology and hydraulic (TUFLOW) models under the guidance of senior engineers.
Using GIS tools to manage, review and present hydrological data and flood modelling outputs.
Given opportunities to develop skills and assist with drainage design tasks, including culverts, open channels, pit and pipe systems.
Contributing to water quality assessments and modelling, including opportunities to learn tools such as MUSIC.
Preparing clear technical inputs, design reports, figures and supporting documentation.
About You
A degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, or a related water resources discipline.
1–3 years’ experience in flood modelling, hydrology, or drainage design.
A strong interest in hydrology and hydraulic modelling, particularly TUFLOW hydraulic modelling for infrastructure and development projects.
Exposure to ARR, QUDM, Austroads or TMR guidance would be helpful, but a willingness to learn is just as important.
Experience with QGIS and an interest in developing your mapping and data presentation skills.
Exposure to drainage design software such as 12D, DRAINS or MUSIC would be beneficial, but not essential.
A positive, team-first attitude with curiosity, attention to detail and a willingness to learn from experienced engineers.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to contribute to high-quality reports and project deliverables.
Imagine a better future for you and a better future for us all.
