About this role:
Wells Fargo is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead the modernization of the bank’s core banking transaction processing platform. This role is responsible for delivering a resilient, scalable, secure, and compliant foundation that supports high‑throughput account and transaction processing capabilities.
The Principal Engineer will act as a technical authority across multiple products and platforms, driving architecture, solution design, and engineering best practices. This role requires close collaboration with product, architecture, and production engineering teams to deliver measurable outcomes across availability, performance, risk, and cost efficiency, while enabling transformation from legacy systems to modern, cloud‑native platforms.
In this role, you will:
- Act as an advisor to leadership to develop or influence applications, network, information security, database, operating systems, or web technologies for highly complex business and technical needs across multiple groups
- Lead the strategy and resolution of highly complex and unique challenges requiring in-depth evaluation across multiple areas or the enterprise, delivering solutions that are long-term, large-scale and require vision, creativity, innovation, advanced analytical and inductive thinking
- Translate advanced technology experience, an in-depth knowledge of the organizations tactical and strategic business objectives, the enterprise technological environment, the organization structure, and strategic technological opportunities and requirements into technical engineering solutions
- Provide vision, direction and expertise to leadership on implementing innovative and significant business solutions
- Maintain knowledge of industry best practices and new technologies and recommends innovations that enhance operations or provide a competitive advantage to the organization
- Strategically engage with all levels of professionals and managers across the enterprise and serve as an expert advisor to leadership
Required Qualifications:
- 7+ years of Engineering experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
Desired Qualifications:
- Technology oriented B.E/B Tech Degree or equivalent advanced degree
- 7+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3+ years in a principal or staff engineer role.
- Proven experience in modernizing heritage systems into microservices, java, spring boot and event-driven architectures.
- Exposure to Cloud and its service offerings, including automation, orchestration, trends and industry-leading cloud vendor offerings.
- Experience in database migration and transformation, from relational to NoSQL and/or polyglot persistence.
- Solid grounding in resilience engineering concepts and experience in SRE practices.
- Experience working in highly regulated environments like financial services is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of distributed systems, APIs, messaging frameworks (Kafka, RabbitMQ), and container orchestration (Kubernetes).
- Hands-on knowledge of AI/ML tools, GenAI coding assistants (Copilot, Devin, etc.), and automation platforms.
- Domain Functional Knowledge – Banking, Financial Services, Payments
- Experience with Agile, CI/CD, DevOps concepts and SRE principles.
- Experience in setting up and using Observability/Monitoring tools: Elastic, Kibana, Grafana, AppDynamics, Kafka, Big Panda, Splunk
- Experience with one or more CI/CD Pipeline (GitHub, Jenkins), Release management and Automation tools: Gradle, Maven, Git

- Has skills to conduct various performance tests for e.g., Load, spike, breakpoint, endurance etc to understand application/ service limits.
- Ability to deliver & engage with architects effectively in a Tech demands and modernizations by demonstrating strong ownership & accountability.
- Delivery focus and willingness to work in a fast-paced, enterprise environment.
