Job Description
Role Summary:
The Sr. Manager; Software Engineering leads a team responsible for reviewing business requirements and developing functional and technical design documentation. This role oversees the design and implementation of testing procedures for APIs, abstractions, and integration patterns to address distributed computing challenges, including end-to-end and integration testing. The Sr. Manager participates in design reviews, providing input on requirements, product designs, schedules, and potential issues, and works across the team to ensure productivity, predictability, and delivery of high-quality results.
The position includes accountability for code review and the team’s development and testing activities, as well as participation in proof of concepts and technical evaluations of new technologies. The Sr. Manager is expected to foster a collaborative environment, ensuring the team meets business needs and delivers robust solutions.
All roles require digital fluency, including the ability to work with emerging technologies such as Generative AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot) to support everyday work.
Essential Functions:
People Leadership & Talent Development:
- Hire, retain, and develop a diverse, high-performing team of software engineers across the Bangalore hub.
- Own performance management, career growth, and promotion pipelines; deliver concrete coaching and mentoring to grow engineers into senior/staff roles.
- Build a healthy, inclusive team culture with strong engagement and retention signals.
Delivery & Execution Management:
- Own end-to-end delivery for a product area — planning, prioritization, risk management, and predictable execution against roadmap commitments.
- Drive operational excellence: incident ownership, on-call health, code quality, and reduction of technical debt.
- Manage multiple competing initiatives and timelines, balancing scope, speed, and quality.
- Establish and track delivery metrics (on-time delivery, uptime, throughput, defect rates) and report progress to stakeholders.
Technical Credibility & Hands-On Engagement:
- Stay close enough to the technology to review code and designs, unblock engineers, and make sound technical calls — capable of going hands-on when needed.
- Participate in architecture and design reviews; provide informed technical judgment on trade-offs.
- Guide troubleshooting, defect triage, and root-cause analysis for critical issues.
GenAI/LLM Leadership:
- Champion the adoption of GenAI and modern engineering tooling within the team, driving practical, production use cases.
- Stay technically literate in GenAI/LLM concepts and evaluate opportunities to apply them to the product area.
- Partner with engineers building GenAI-enabled features; support experimentation while ensuring production rigor.
System Design & Architecture Judgment:
- Guide the team's architecture and technical direction for the product area, ensuring scalability, security, and resilience.
- Evaluate build-vs-buy and technology choices; set standards for APIs, microservices, and integration patterns (HTTP, REST, JSON, XML).
- Partner with architects and other engineering leaders to align designs with platform-wide standards.
Stakeholder & Organizational Influence:
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, QA, DevOps, and global engineering teams to deliver complete solutions.
- Partner with business stakeholders on requirements, workflow design, and process re-engineering.
- Represent the team in cross-org planning and communicate status, risks, and trade-offs clearly to leadership.
- Collaborate across global, distributed teams and time zones to ensure alignment and consistent delivery standards.
Visa requires at least 3 days in office, expectations of these days will be confirmed by your Hiring Manager.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- 10+ years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor's Degree or at least 8 years of experience with an Advanced Degree (e.g. Master's, MBA, JD, MD) or 5 years of experience with a PhD, OR 13+ years of relevant work experience — including demonstrated people-management experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 12 or more years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor's Degree or 10 or more years of relevant experience with an Advanced Degree, or 7 or more years of experience with a PhD.
- Proven experience leading and growing engineering teams — hiring, coaching, performance management, and driving retention.
- Track record of delivering a product area predictably, with metrics for on-time delivery, quality, and operational health.
- Hands-on coding experience in one or more modern programming languages (e.g., Java, Python, C#, Node.js), with the depth to review code and engage in technical discussions.
- Expertise with container and cloud technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Azure, or GCP).
- Experience with observability stacks (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/OpenSearch, Datadog, or Splunk).
- Experience championing or driving adoption of GenAI/LLM technologies within an engineering team.
- Experience building and guiding teams that build microservices using HTTP, REST, JSON, and XML.
- Experience guiding system design and architecture decisions for a product or platform area.
- Experience managing incidents, production support, and operational excellence practices.
- Experience partnering with product, QA, DevOps, and Agile/Scrum teams in a distributed, global engineering organization.
- Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate technical and business trade-offs to diverse stakeholders.
- Payment industry experience is highly desirable.
The Skills You Bring:
- Energy and Experience: A growth mindset that is curious and passionate about technology, and enjoys leading teams on challenging, global-scale projects.
- People-First Leadership: A genuine investment in developing engineers, with a track record of promotions, mentoring, and healthy team retention.
- Technical Credibility: Comfortable enough with the technology to review designs and code, and to earn the trust of senior engineers.
- Learner: A drive to stay current on emerging technologies such as GenAI, Kubernetes, Docker, and modern cloud-native patterns.
- Partnership: Experience collaborating with Product, Test, DevOps, and Agile/Scrum teams to deliver outcomes, not just output.
- Execution Discipline: Ability to manage multiple competing priorities and deliver predictably in a fast-paced environment.
