As Counsel, Tech, AI, and IP for Verily, you will play a pivotal role in driving strategic commercial transactions, leading all aspects of IP risks and strategies, providing day-to-day legal and compliance support for the cross-functional design, development, deployment, and ongoing oversight of AI systems across the enterprise. You will partner directly with a team of experts from the fields of healthcare, technology, engineering, computer science, and more on complex commercial transactions that support groundbreaking projects. This role demands a seasoned legal professional with a strategic mindset, leadership potential, and the ability to navigate complex legal issues in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
Negotiate and advise on IP, AI, and technology related contractual provisions with vendors, partners, and customers, including data use, model training, indemnities, audit rights, tech ownership, transfer, and development, inbound and outbound licensing, and cloud and application hosting.
Provide legal counsel and support cross-functional implementation of the enterprise AI governance framework, including model inventory, lifecycle controls, human oversight protocols, data retention, disclosures, training, and incident response workflows - both for internal AI use and for AI use with external facing healthcare products and services.
Track and interpret global AI laws, regulations, guidance, and standards, and translate them into actionable policies, playbooks, standards, and training materials. For example, comfortable advising on key AI laws and frameworks, including the EU AI Act, NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001, OECD AI Principles, and U.S. federal and state AI guidance.
Develop an IP strategy that will support product development and commercialization goals and supervise outside counsel in the preparation and prosecution of trademarks and patents.
Minimum Qualifications
JD degree or equivalent education.
Licensed to practice law in a US jurisdiction.
6+ years of experience in a law firm or in-house legal department, specifically supporting healthtech transactions, SaaS agreements, including IP and commercial deal structuring, and advising science and engineering teams.
Substantive experience drafting and negotiating complex licensing and commercial technology agreements (technology transactions or IP licensing strongly preferred)
Experience in advising and leading development of AI-driven products (e.g., LLMs, machine learning, or agentic workflows) within a complex, regulated enterprise environment.
Preferred Qualifications
B.S., M.S., PhD or equivalent experience in life sciences, preferably in Data Sciences, Bioinformatics, Genomics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or Computational Biology.
Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Demonstrated strong communication skills and experience effectively collaborating with cross-functional teams.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage a high volume of requests, balance competing priorities, and handle multiple time-sensitive projects simultaneously.
Ability to be flexible, self-directed, and thrive in a fast-paced environment with limited direction.
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $188,500 - $282,500 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
