Product Tech Counsel
Thomson Reuters VenturesProduct Tech Counsel
We are seeking a Product Tech Counsel to join Thomson Reuters’ General Counsel’s Office. This role offers a unique opportunity to advise on the legal, regulatory, and strategic dimensions of a global technology and services portfolio, including the development and commercialization of advanced AI‑enabled products in an increasingly complex and highly regulated environment.
You will partner closely with Product, Technology, Marketing, Commercial and Compliance teams to help enable innovation at scale while managing legal, regulatory, and reputational risk across jurisdictions.
This position is well‑suited for a lawyer who thrives in a matrixed organization, is comfortable advising amid regulatory uncertainty, and can translate complex legal requirements into practical, product‑ready guidance.
About the Role
In this role as Product Tech Counsel, you will:
- Advise across the full product lifecycle, from early ideation and design through development, launch, iteration, and sunsetting of products across Thomson Reuters’ global technology product portfolio.
- Serve as a trusted legal partner to Product, Technology, and Marketing, helping teams identify, assess, and manage legal, regulatory, and business‑reputation risks in fast‑moving and evolving markets.
- Provide subject‑matter guidance on global AI regulation, including emerging and enacted laws governing artificial intelligence and automated decision‑making.
- Advise on global regulatory frameworks, including advertising, intellectual property and consumer protection, with particular focus on the UK, EU, LATAM, and AEM regions.
- Review and advise on marketing strategies, confirming substantiation of product claims and reviewing marketing assets across digital and other channels.
- Support product partnerships, integrations, and co‑development initiatives, working closely with Commercial and Product colleagues to ensure proper protection of Thomson Reuters intellectual property and compliance with artificial intelligence laws.
- Support development and improvement of scalable processes to support consistent decision‑making and faster execution across global teams.
- Collaborate effectively within the General Counsel’s Office and across functions, contributing to enterprise‑wide initiatives relating to AI governance, product compliance by design, and regulatory readiness.
About You
You're a fit for the role of Product Tech Counsel if your background includes:
- Law degree (or equivalent/conversion) and current practicing lawyer (current bar admission/practicing certificate).
- 3+ years of relevant experience in a law firm and/or in‑house environment advising on technology‑driven products, technology transactions and / or consumer protection.
- Familiarity with, or strong interest in, AI‑related regulation and governance, as well as global intellectual property, advertising, and consumer protection laws.
- The ability to balance legal risk with business objectives, providing practical, solution‑oriented advice in situations where the law may be developing or unsettled.
- A process‑oriented mindset, with experience building, improving, or scaling legal workflows, tools, or governance models to support complex organizations.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, with demonstrated effectiveness working in a global, matrixed operating model.
- Initiative, intellectual curiosity, and comfort operating amid ambiguity.
Experience in a technical discipline, prior exposure to AI/ML concepts, or work in a highly regulated technology sector is a plus.
