East Africa Producer / Video Journalist

Reuters is seeking an experienced Producer / Video Journalist to join its Nairobi bureau. This is a hands-on, multi-skilled role requiring an outstanding journalist who can identify stories, plan coverage, produce, shoot, write and edit compelling video journalism for Reuters' global clients and platforms and work in a multi skilled one newsroom set up.
You will have excellent editorial judgement, strong visual storytelling skills and the ability to work independently or lead coverage as part of a wider newsroom team. You should be equally comfortable responding to breaking news, producing complex enterprise stories, and coordinating coverage across multiple locations as you help identify original stories that resonate with global audiences.
The successful candidate will have at least five years' professional experience in broadcast or digital video journalism, including extensive field reporting in fast-moving and, where required, hostile environments.
About the Role
As East Africa Producer / Video Journalist at Reuters, you will:
Produce, shoot and edit high-quality video for Reuters' global television and digital platforms.
Cover breaking news and planned stories across Kenya and East Africa, often travelling at short notice.
Plan editorial coverage, conduct research, identify interviewees and develop strong visual storylines.
Coordinate field coverage with reporters, photographers, editors and planning teams to deliver complete multimedia stories.
Write accurate scripts, shot lists and metadata under tight deadlines.
Deliver live coverage and provide editorial updates during major news events.
Operate professional broadcast cameras, drones, gimbals, GoPros and mobile newsgathering equipment.
Edit to Reuters broadcast standards using industry-standard editing software.
Produce stories that work across television, digital and social media platforms.
Maintain the highest editorial, legal and safety standards while working in the field.
Help identify original stories that resonate with global audiences.
About You
You're a fit for the role of East Africa Producer / Video Journalist if you have:
Significant experience as both a producer and camera operator in a professional newsroom.
Outstanding shooting, producing and editing skills.
Strong editorial judgement and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
Excellent planning and organisational skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple assignments simultaneously.
Experience covering breaking news, politics, business, conflict, humanitarian issues and feature stories.
Strong interviewing skills and the ability to build relationships with a wide range of sources.
A clear understanding of digital storytelling and audience-focused journalism.
Proficiency with professional broadcast cameras, live transmission systems, editing software and mobile journalism tools.
Experience operating drones is desirable, with appropriate certification where required.
A basic ability to capture still photographs for editorial use.
Excellent written and spoken English, with fluency in at least one relevant local language.
A willingness to travel extensively, including to challenging or hostile environments.
