Job Description:
The Senior Mainframe Developer is responsible for the design, development, modernization, and support of critical applications within Core Investment Management (Core IM). The role involves delivering secure and reliable mainframe solutions, supporting complex batch processing, production stability, regulatory requirements, and ongoing technology improvements.
Responsibilities:
- Produce high-quality functional and technical designs for Core Investment Management and the RIO (Registered Income Options) application.
- Participate in complex application and systems development, project planning, estimation, programming, testing, implementation, and status reporting to ensure deliverables are completed on time and meet corporate quality and security standards.
- Translate business, Enterprise Architecture, system performance, regulatory, and development-standard requirements into maintainable RIO mainframe solutions.
- Design, develop, enhance, and support COBOL, JCL, IMS DB/DC and/or DB2 components, VSAM files, datasets, copybooks, control cards, utilities, and batch processes.
- Analyze RIO job flows, data dependencies, and upstream and downstream interfaces, including file-based and mailbox integrations with internal applications and external service providers.
- Conduct code reviews to address quality, standards compliance, security, reusability, performance, and ease of maintenance; support Operational Readiness Reviews, gating, and solution sign-offs.
- Complete unit, integration, SIT/PAT, and end-to-end testing in accordance with standards and design specifications; investigate defects and provide evidence for release readiness.
- Troubleshoot production incidents, job abends, data issues, and service interruptions; perform impact and root-cause analysis, implement remediation, and facilitate stakeholder communication.
- Participate in change governance, implementation and rollback planning, peer review, production validation, incident management, problem management, and planned on-call support.
- Contribute to RIO application stewardship activities, including application currency, vulnerability remediation, access controls, audit/SOX evidence, TARA/TDAR updates, data retention, disaster recovery, and regulatory obligations.
- Maintain technical documentation, runbooks, job-flow diagrams, interface inventories, operational procedures, and knowledge-transfer material.
- Collaborate with developers, QEs, BSAs, product partners, architecture, operations, risk, support teams, and vendors; identify risks and dependencies early and drive them to closure.
- Contribute to Core IM and RIO mainframe modernization initiatives while maintaining the stability, security, and governance of a critical banking application.
- Advance modern mainframe development using Git, GitHub, VS Code, Code4z/Zowe, Endevor Bridge for Git, branch and pull-request workflows, and hybrid Git/Endevor engineering practices.
- Help establish and enhance the Endevor-to-Git CI pipeline for RIO, including repository onboarding, source synchronization, Endevor compilation, automated quality checks, and security scanning using available enterprise capabilities.
- Use GitHub Copilot responsibly in approved environments to assist with COBOL/JCL code understanding, impact analysis, documentation, code generation and refactoring, unit-test design, defect analysis, and knowledge transfer.
- Validate all GitHub Copilot-generated or AI-assisted output through developer review, approved coding standards, testing, security controls, and established change-management processes.
- Promote code explainability, dependency analysis, automated testing, modern debugging, reusable engineering patterns, technical-debt reduction, and measurable improvements to the mainframe developer experience.
Job Requirements:
- Undergraduate Degree, Technical Certificate, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 6+ years of mainframe application design, development, implementation, and production support experience (financial industry preferred).
