Your Opportunity Stantec is seeking a senior environmental compliance professional for an hourly on-call role supporting industrial and energy-sector clients, particularly in oil and gas and other highly regulated operations. This position is ideal for an experienced professional who can provide flexible, high-value technical support on a project-by-project basis, including environmental permitting, compliance program review, inspections, regulatory coordination, and preparation of technically sound, regulator-defensible plans and reports across air quality, storm water, wastewater, spill prevention, and related environmental programs. Workload will vary based on project demand and business needs, with assignments offered as opportunities arise. The ideal candidate brings strong technical judgment, an independent work style, and the ability to step into assignments quickly and effectively as client and project needs arise. Your Key Responsibilities
- Provide senior-level environmental compliance support for industrial and energy-sector facilities, helping clients manage obligations across air quality, storm water, wastewater, spill prevention, waste management, and related regulatory requirements.
- Prepare, review, and support permit applications, renewals, modifications, technical reports, and routine compliance submissions to state and federal regulatory agencies.
- Provide technical support on air compliance activities including emissions inventories, stack testing coordination, permit reporting, visible emissions observations, and implementation of applicable federal and state air requirements.
- Develop, review, and maintain SPCC Plans, SWPPPs, and related compliance plans; provide technical oversight and certification support where professional engineer credentials are applicable.
- Conduct or support environmental inspections, compliance audits, and field assessments, and prepare clear, defensible documentation for clients and regulatory agencies.
- Support coordination with regulatory agencies during inspections, permit actions, incident response, and follow-up communications.
- Support spill response, remediation, waste handling, and corrective action activities, including notifications, documentation, and contractor oversight.
- Manage assigned project tasks, schedules, budgets, and deliverable quality for environmental compliance, permitting, and related consulting work.
- Provide technical guidance to project teams and contribute specialized expertise as needed to support client delivery.
- Collaborate with clients, operations personnel, contractors, and interdisciplinary teams to deliver practical, client-focused environmental solutions.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Strong knowledge of environmental compliance programs for industrial, manufacturing, or oil and gas operations, including air quality, storm water, wastewater, spill prevention, and waste management.
- Experience preparing and implementing SPCC Plans, SWPPPs, permit applications, compliance reports, and related environmental documentation.
- Working knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations and the ability to interpret requirements, identify compliance risks, and develop practical, client focused compliance strategies.
- Experience supporting or leading agency inspections, compliance audits, incident response, and corrective action documentation.
- Experience with air compliance activities such as emissions inventories, stack testing coordination, visible emissions observations, permit reporting, and compliance evaluations.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, step into projects quickly, and manage multiple assignments while maintaining technical quality, schedules, and budgets.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of technical reports and client-ready deliverables.
- Proven ability to build strong relationships with clients, contractors, consultants, operations personnel, and regulatory agencies.
- Experience providing technical guidance to project teams and contributing effectively in a flexible, collaborative consulting environment.
- Professional Engineer licensure is strongly preferred; multi-state licensure or the ability to obtain additional registrations is a plus.
- Advanced degree in engineering or a related discipline is preferred.
- Must have a good driving record and valid Driver's License.
Education and Experience A minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience in environmental compliance, permitting, or environmental engineering supporting industrial, manufacturing, energy, or oil and gas operations is required. A bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental science, or a related field is required. A master’s degree and Professional Engineer registration are strongly preferred. Pay Range:- Locations in CO, HI, IL, MD & Various CA, NJ Areas-$117,800.00 - $176,800.00 Annually
Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
