This MRB Engineer is responsible for providing timely and accurate evaluation and disposition of non-conforming Landing Gear materials and components in support of Collins Landing Systems Military Programs. Prior to being delegated engineering signature authority, the typical on-the-job training period alongside experienced MRB Engineers is 30-42 months.
What You Will Do:
- Evaluate nonconforming material for acceptability and flightworthiness (i.e. Scrap, Rework, Repair and Use as is). The nonconforming conditions will vary significantly by material, type, severity and stage in which they are discovered.
- Out of tolerance, excessive taper and/or out-of-round outer diameters and inner diameters.
- Undersized lug thicknesses, slot dimensions, lug walls, etc.
- Mislocated features, true position deviations, lack of parallelism, excessive TIR, poor symmetry and other geometric deviations relating to common Landing Gear components.
- Thread non-conformances (discrepant Major Diameters, Minor Diameters, Pitch Diameters, Root Radius), spline non-conformances, both of which could be detected before or after plating.
- Undersized wall thicknesses in structurally and functionally critical areas of the Shock Strut.
- Non-cleanup during final machining or processing, insufficient removal of forging decarburization layer resulting from discrepant raw material or improper setup prior to machining.
- Surface defects such as corrosion, pitting, tool marks, tool lines, excessive microfinish, false cuts and gouges, handling damage, dropped incident hardware.
- Assembly rejections, including parts not fitting properly and other non-conformances found on finished and painted parts.
- Specification violations related to NDT processes, welding, heat treatment, shot peening, electroplating, grinding of coatings, embrittlement bake, stress relief, incorrect or expired coatings, paints, sealants, etc.
- Discrepant coatings, including discrepant thicknesses, poor adhesion and peeling, excessive plating runout, blistering, pitting, flaking, delamination, etc.
- Improper/incorrect part identification or loss of material traceability.
- Rejections during non-destructive testing (MPI/FPI indications, temper indications, Barkhausen rejections, etc.).
- Facilitate the resolution of design issues discovered during assembly on newer programs, parts already in production are addressed via the MRB/QN process (in coordination with internal functions or the customer) until an Engineering change spelling out disposition of existing stock is released, to best support production efforts and Customer needs.
- If part is evaluated and deemed to be not acceptable as is, determine if and how the part can be repaired, and provide concise and thorough instructions to restore the part to an acceptable/flightworthy condition.
- Provide timely and accurate disposition of Quality Notifications (QNs) to maintain department QN turnaround time (TAT) monthly goals and metrics.
- MRB Engineering provides technical support when required, directly on the shop floor or via email/telecon to various groups regarding MRB issues, and often non-MRB issues. Technical support is often provided to the various machine shops, plating shops, assembly shops, Quality Clinics, Supply chain management, program teleconferences, and vendors.
- Provide subject matter expertise during Continuous Improvement (CI) events and continue improvement projects and any other activity when requested.
- Support Customer Service and/or MRO site on warranty issues and product returns.
- Preparation of waivers on military programs where we are not delegated MRB Authority to include analyses and rationale to fully support all detailed recommended dispositions.
- Customer coordination on MRB issues.
- Potential on-site Vendor support on critical issues.
- Provide coverage on weekends, holidays, and off shifts per a pre-established schedule when required.
- Attend Operations/Production calls or meetings and provide timely follow-up on critical issues.
- Provide risk assessment of nonconforming hardware for Operations and Finance.
- Keep accurate track of time spent on each task and log the hours daily.
- Maintain records, including stress, design, MP&T and customer coordination, stress analyses performed, in accordance with company policies. These should be stored such they can be easily retrieved by all members of the MRB Engineering staff.
- Attend training activities as required by the MRB manager.
- Travel 5% as needed.
