As a Data Engineer 1 on our Insights Delivery Finance team, you will help build analytical solutions and self-serve tools that empower Nordstrom's finance organization to access and understand their data independently. Working alongside senior engineers, you will contribute to platforms that enable conversational analytics, interactive reporting, and on-demand insights — reducing finance teams' dependency on ad-hoc requests and putting answers directly in their hands. This is an opportunity to grow your engineering skills at the intersection of data, AI, and finance.
This role is offered as hybrid in Seattle, WA. Candidates must be available to work in office at the Nordstrom corporate headquarters a minimum of 4 days/week to be considered for this position.
A day in the life...
Technical Development
• Build and maintain Python-based data pipelines that prepare financial data for analytical consumption in BigQuery
• Develop dbt models following the medallion architecture to create clean, reliable datasets that power self-serve analytics
• Contribute to conversational analytics capabilities that allow finance users to query data using natural language
• Write SQL transformations that shape data for dashboards, reports, and AI-driven insights tools
• Help build and maintain APIs and services that deliver data to downstream analytical applications
Collaboration & Learning
• Work with senior engineers to understand requirements and translate them into well-structured code
• Partner with finance stakeholders to understand their analytical needs and validate that solutions deliver actionable insights
• Participate in code reviews, asking questions and incorporating feedback to improve your work
• Contribute to team documentation and user-facing guides that help finance teams adopt self-serve tools
Quality & Growth
• Write clear, tested code that follows team standards and is easily understood by others
• Learn and apply best practices for building reliable, scalable analytics solutions
• Understand how to instrument pipelines and applications with logging, metrics, and alerting
• Stay curious about emerging AI and analytics technologies and bring ideas back to the team
• Adhere to engineering and security standards
You own this if you have...
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or related field
• Internship or coursework experience in software engineering or data engineering
• Python Proficiency: Ability to write clean, readable Python code for data processing and application development
• SQL Fundamentals: Comfortable writing queries to explore, transform, and validate data
• Data Concepts: Understanding of relational databases, data modeling, and ELT/ETL patterns
• Cloud Familiarity: Exposure to cloud platforms (GCP or AWS) through coursework or projects
• Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills and attention to detail when debugging data issues
Nice to Have:
• Experience with BigQuery, dbt, or other modern data stack tools
• Familiarity with LLMs, AI agents, or conversational interfaces
• Exposure to visualization tools like Tableau or Looker
• Experience with Git and CI/CD workflows
