Position details
The APAC Data Network Engineering Lead is accountable for leading the engineering function to design, build, automate, secure, modernise, and continuously improve the Bank's APAC data network. This combined technical and people leadership role leads and develops the regional engineering team while retaining strong hands-on technical ownership across data centre, campus, WAN, wireless, Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN, and network automation domains.
The position sets technical direction, establishes engineering standards, acts as the senior escalation point for complex issues, and owns end-to-end delivery of network transformation initiatives. The four core technical competencies for this position are: (1) Cisco ACI; (2) Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN; (3) routing protocols - BGP, OSPF, and EIGRP; and (4) Cisco Wireless. Candidates must demonstrate advanced, current, hands-on capability in at least three of these four areas.
Roles and Responsibilities
Team Leadership and Engineering Excellence
• Lead, coach, and develop the APAC network engineering team, building technical depth, accountability, delivery discipline, and succession capability.
• Set technical direction and maintain a high engineering standard across architecture, design quality, automation, documentation, testing, and execution.
• Act as the senior technical escalation point for complex engineering issues and critical incidents, providing decisive direction and hands-on support where required.
• Embed peer review, reusable engineering patterns, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement across the function.
Engineering Strategy, Architecture, and Standards
• Serve as the Technical SME and engineering owner for the Bank's APAC data network, with primary ownership of Cisco ACI and broader ownership across campus, LAN/WAN, wireless, Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN, and related connectivity services.
• Define and maintain target architectures, engineering standards, configuration baselines, design patterns, technology roadmaps, and lifecycle plans.
• Ensure solutions are secure, resilient, scalable, supportable, observable, and aligned with banking, operational risk, regulatory, and audit requirements.
• Provide technical guidance and design assurance to network engineering, enterprise architecture, cyber security, infrastructure, application, and operations teams.
Programme and Project Delivery
• Own end-to-end engineering delivery for data centre, campus, WAN, wireless, and SD-WAN initiatives from planning and design through build, test, migration, cutover, and operational handover.
• Lead concurrent network transformation and modernisation projects, managing scope, resources, dependencies, risks, milestones, and delivery quality.
• Coordinate with project teams, application owners, operations, security, vendors, and OEM partners to remove blockers and deliver agreed outcomes.
• Provide clear technical status, risk, decision, and dependency reporting to senior stakeholders and governance forums.
Hands-on Design, Build, and Troubleshooting
• Personally lead and, where required, execute the architecture, detailed design, build, implementation, migration, and validation of enterprise network infrastructure.
• Produce and assure high-quality HLDs, LLDs, implementation procedures, migration and cutover plans, test plans, validation evidence, and rollback plans.
• Lead complex troubleshooting across ACI, routing, switching, SD-WAN, wireless, load balancing, DNS, firewall traffic flows, and application connectivity.
• Use packet capture, telemetry, platform diagnostics, and flow-analysis tools to drive evidence-based root cause analysis and permanent remediation.
• Review high-risk changes and conduct post-implementation technical reviews to improve future engineering outcomes.
Automation and NetDevOps
• Drive automation across network provisioning, configuration, compliance, testing, validation, and operational handover using Ansible, Python, and scripting.
• Establish repeatable, version-controlled engineering workflows using Git/GitHub, Jinja2 templates, CI/CD pipelines, and automated test frameworks.
• Apply infrastructure-as-code and NetDevOps practices, including Terraform where appropriate, to improve speed, consistency, traceability, and control.
• Use REST APIs, NETCONF/RESTCONF, YANG models, and orchestration platforms to integrate and automate network services.
Technical Governance, Risk, and Vendor Management
• Provide technical governance for architecture, design, change, configuration, resilience, security, observability, and lifecycle management.
• Ensure engineering deliverables meet operational risk, regulatory, auditability, vulnerability, and documentation requirements.
• Engage OEMs and strategic vendors on solution design, technical assurance, product roadmaps, defects, lifecycle matters, and complex escalations.
• Support audit, risk, vulnerability, obsolescence, and resilience-remediation activities relating to the data network estate.
Job Requirements:
Leadership and Experience
Minimum 14 years of enterprise network engineering experience, including demonstrated responsibility for leading or managing engineering teams.
Proven people leadership is mandatory; this is not an individual contributor role operating at a purely managerial distance from the technology.
Demonstrated success as the senior escalation point for complex technical issues and as the accountable engineering lead for major delivery outcomes.
Strong track record delivering enterprise-scale network builds, migrations, transformation programmes, and service improvements.
Banking or financial services experience is strongly preferred; APAC regional experience is an advantage.
Current hands-on technical credibility is essential. The candidate must be able to challenge designs, guide senior engineers, and personally support complex execution when needed.
Strong stakeholder management, communication, influencing, technical documentation, and decision-making skills.
Mandatory Technical Competencies
Candidates must demonstrate advanced, current, hands-on production capability in at least three of the following four core technical competencies: (1) Cisco ACI; (2) Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN; (3) routing protocols - BGP, OSPF, and EIGRP; and (4) Cisco Wireless.
Advanced end-to-end engineering capability covering architecture, design, build, migration, operations, lifecycle management, and troubleshooting in large, business-critical environments.
Proven ability to translate architecture into implementable designs, lead complex cutovers, validate outcomes, and resolve cross-domain application connectivity issues.
Demonstrable automation experience using Ansible and scripting, applied to real network build, compliance, testing, and validation processes.
Qualifications and Certifications
CCIE Data Center or CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure, or demonstrably equivalent expert-level technical depth, is required.
Relevant Cisco ACI, Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN, Cisco Wireless, network automation/Ansible, and cloud-networking certifications are advantageous.
A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or an equivalent discipline is preferred.
