The Repair Manager is responsible for supporting the Plant Manager in minimizing revenue loss associated with repair turnaround times while maintaining strong customer relationships through the efficient, safe, and cost-effective management of railcar repair operations. The role provides leadership and oversight for repair, lining, cleaning, coating, and painting activities, ensuring all work is completed in accordance with Company policies and procedures, engineering specifications, and applicable AAR, DOT, FRA, OSHA, and other regulatory requirements. Through effective production planning, workforce management, and cross-functional coordination, the Repair Manager ensures customer expectations are met while maintaining high standards for safety, quality, productivity, and operational excellence.
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Lead and direct all railcar repair operations through the supervision of Repair Supervisors, Lining Supervisors, and Cleaning Rack Supervisors.
- Develop, coordinate, and manage production schedules to ensure timely completion of repairs and fulfillment of customer requirements.
- Prioritize repair activities based on business needs, customer commitments, and direction provided by the Plant Manager.
- Coordinate workflow and resources across multiple operational areas to maximize efficiency and minimize production delays.
- Monitor and evaluate production performance, productivity, quality, and safety metrics throughout the repair process.
- Ensure all repair, coating, painting, lining, and cleaning activities comply with Company Standard Operating Procedures and all applicable AAR, DOT, FRA, OSHA, and government regulations.
- Maintain safe, organized, and productive work environments throughout the facility.
- Provide leadership, coaching, training, and performance management for supervisory personnel, including conducting annual performance evaluations and developing new supervisors.
- Collaborate with inspectors and quality personnel to ensure all work meets established quality standards and regulatory requirements.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with employees, union representatives (where applicable), customers, and all levels of plant management.
- Support labor relations efforts, including participation in union climate meetings and employee engagement initiatives, as applicable.
- Organize and conduct safety meetings, training programs, and compliance initiatives.
- Assist in accident investigations and the preparation of incident and injury reports.
- Oversee physical inventory activities and support effective materials management.
- Manage vacation schedules and workforce coverage to ensure operational continuity.
- Assist the Plant Manager in the development and management of annual operating budgets.
- Serve as acting Plant Manager during periods of absence, including travel, vacation, illness, or other extended leaves.
- Provide management coverage for absent Repair Supervisors and ensure uninterrupted operational leadership.
- Identify and implement process improvements, enhanced work methods, and operational efficiencies to improve turnaround time, reduce costs, and maintain quality standards.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, quality, and customer service throughout the organization.
- Champion Union Tank Car Company's Quality Policy by ensuring internal and external customer expectations are consistently met or exceeded.
- Support and actively participate in the Responsible Care Management System and all associated programs and initiatives.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support plant operations and business objectives.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 3–5 years previous supervisory or leadership experience in a manufacturing, repair, or industrial environment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and regulatory documentation.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- High degree of accuracy, attention to detail, and accountability.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a production environment.
- Vision correctable to 20/30 for inspection and quality assurance activities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in railroad, tank car repair, or regulated industrial operations.
- Strong working knowledge of AAR, DOT, and FRA rules and regulatory requirements.
- Understanding of tank car design, components, and applicable regulations.
- Demonstrated experience implementing quality improvement or safety initiatives.
Work Environment & Schedule
- Work is performed in an industrial railcar repair environment involves regular exposure to challenging physically demanding and environmental conditions.
- Duties may be performed outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, heat, and noise is common
- Job requires moderate to heavy physical exertion, including lifting, climbing, working at heights, and working in confined spaces
- Must be able to enter tank cars through 20‑inch manway openings
- Manual dexterity and physical coordination required for tool and equipment operation
- Potential exposure to hazardous materials due to leaks or spills
- Must comply with all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols
- This is an on-site position requiring five days per week in the facility, with availability to work off-shift hours, overtime, and weekends as business needs dictate.

Pay Range:
94,500.00 - 115,500.00
