Head of Business Strategy and Performance

Job Purpose

The Executive Director, Strategy and Performance is a key business leadership role accountable for shaping and delivering the R&D Asia strategy, operating model, capability and performance to accelerate translational science and development, strengthen portfolio delivery, and build an enduring high-performance organization across China, Japan and the wider Asia network.

As a strategic leader and decision partner interfacing with the leadership teams in Asia and global, the role drives the execution of organizational strategic objectives, matrix working and business performance across Asia R&D for stakeholder trust and sustained value creation of R&D in Asia.

The Executive Director, Strategy and Performance leads the business management of the Asia R&D integrating strategy, operating model optimization, performance enhancement, scientific engagement, capability development and culture shaping to deliver a high-performance, agile and resilient R&D organization in Asia. The role provides culture leadership and delivery framework across the Asia R&D as a key decision partner to regional and global stakeholders, accountable for business delivery programs for Asia R&D to turn strategies into execution discipline that deliver optimal results with fast pace, efficiency and high-quality.

The Executive Director, Strategy and Performance is a key member of the Asia R&D Leadership Team and will report to the VP and Head of Asia R&D.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy and Performance Direction

• Define, refresh and lead the Asia R&D strategy in alignment with enterprise priorities, global R&D strategies and stakeholder expectations
• Translate strategic goals into clear operating objectives, investment priorities and execution plan that reflect scientific opportunity, portfolio needs and organisational capability
• Lead strategic reviews of business delivery and shape decision-making in Asia R&D  

Operating Model and Transformation

• Own the optimisation of the Asia R&D operating model to ensure it is fit to accelerate translational science and development, late-stage pipeline delivery and cross-functional execution
• Define accountabilities, decision process, governance interfaces and ways of working to empower and enable matrix delivery
• Lead organisational change management programs that continuously improve productivity, quality and organisational adaptability

Performance Management

• Direct dPR/SPR aligned portfolio prioritization and resource allocation in Asia R&D to ensure efficient and effective deployment
• Establish performance management with clear objectives, measures, review mechanism and escalation process to drive progress against objectives, milestones and behavioral expectations
• Hold the project leaders, line managers and individuals accountable for delivery, ensure rapid and effective intervention when strategy and performance is at risk

Governance, Compliance and Risk Management

• Lead the governance processes in Asia R&D for business strategic reviews, portfolio progress, innovation partnerships, tech enabling initiatives
• As Asia R&D business representative, oversee the business-level risk identification, mitigation, escalation and resolution

Scientific Engagement and External Positioning:

• Develop strategy and execution framework, drive need assessment, opportunity identification, and effective engagement execution that align to business priorities
• Develop internal and external networks and partnerships to build and strengthen scientific connectivity that support project delivery and innovation

Capability Building

• Lead the capability building model and oversee development and delivery of capability programs for Asia R&D ensuring

  strong market expertise and ‘Know-How’ of planning, execution and engagement in Asia focusing on China, Japan and Singapore

  strong technical competency in R&D especially translational and clinical development sciences

  global-leading standards and end-to-end capability for pipeline delivery in Asia

• Create and continue to advance a culture of innovation, growth mindset and enterprise thinking

Culture and Team Leadership

• As a key LT member, shape the innovation and execution culture in alignment with the enterprise strategy, priorities and business values

• Develop and drive employee engagement for agility, performance-driven learning and collaboration
  • Develop and manage teams, support business partners to create a high-performing environment and continuous improvement
