At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is for a Software Development Engineer III to join our Sales, Strategy & Corporate Development (SSCD) organization. You will design and operate the backend services, web applications, and digital infrastructure that power SMS’s internal platforms.
As the technical owner of SSCD software infrastructure, you will build scalable, resilient systems that serve users across Sales, Strategy, Corporate Development, and Government Affairs Teams. You will be embedded on these teams to understand needs and then leverage your software engineering experience to automate business workflows, surface insights from unstructured data, and enable team members to make faster, better-informed decisions.
Responsibilities
Serve as the technical owner of SMS internal software platforms—designing system architecture, executing development, managing production reliability
Build cloud-native AWS solutions with modern service architecture, managing the full deployment lifecycle on AWS GovCloud (ECS, RDS, S3, IAM)
Design and operate backend services and APIs using Python, supporting business-critical platforms for corporate development, strategy, and sales workflows
Develop infrastructure-as-code and maintain deployment reliability across dev and production environments
Architect and implement AI/LLM-powered features — including natural language query interfaces, automated document processing, intelligent data extraction, and workflow automation
Leverage AI-assisted development tools throughout the engineering workflow to accelerate delivery and enable non-engineer contributors
Build integrations with enterprise platforms (knowledge management, collaboration tools, data warehouses) to create a unified data layer for SMS operations
Implement secure authentication, role-based access controls, and data handling appropriate for ITAR/EAR and controlled unclassified information (CUI) environments
Conduct code reviews, establish engineering standards, and maintain documentation that ensures long-term maintainability of SMS platforms
Qualifications
B.S. degree or higher in computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, mathematics, physics, aerospace, or related field.
5+ years of professional experience in software development and production deployment
Proficiency in at least one statically typed language (Java preferred) and one dynamically typed language (Python or JavaScript/TypeScript)
Strong computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, system design)
AWS cloud platform experience (compute, storage, networking, IAM)
Experience developing long-lasting REST/GraphQL APIs and/or applications in a production environment
Nuanced understanding of at least one modern database system, such as RDBMS, columnar DBMS, NoSQL, IMDB.
CI/CD pipeline development and containerization (Docker, ECS/EKS)
Production system ownership including monitoring, alerting, and on-call support
Demonstrated habit of using AI-assisted development tools (such as Claude Code or equivalent) as a core part of your engineering workflow — and the engineering judgment to know when to trust, question, or override what AI generates
Desired
Experience with AI/LLM API integration (prompt engineering, tool-use patterns, streaming responses, retrieval-augmented generation)
Enterprise platform integration experience (CRM, knowledge management, collaboration suites, ERP)
Full-stack development with modern frontend frameworks (server-side rendering, component architecture)
Infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, AWS CDK, or CloudFormation)
Experience building internal tools, business process automation, or enterprise workflow platforms
Prior work in corporate development, finance, or strategy environments
GovCloud or FedRAMP-compliant environment experience
Aerospace, defense, or manufacturing domain background
