The Customer Systems Team is seeking an experienced Platform Engineer to architect, build, and continuously optimize the robust infrastructure and developer tooling that underpins Apple’s critical customer-facing applications. In this pivotal role, you will leverage your deep understanding of cloud-native principles and distributed systems to design and deliver highly scalable, resilient, and secure platforms, with a strong emphasis on Kubernetes orchestration. You will be instrumental in driving automation, implementing infrastructure as code, and fostering a culture of operational excellence. This position requires a critical thinker who can dissect complex infrastructure challenges, propose innovative solutions, and collaborate extensively with cross-functional development teams, SREs, and technical leaders across Apple to elevate our platform capabilities. - 4+ years of experience in designing, building, and operating resilient, large-scale, low-latency platform infrastructure across hybrid cloud and on-premise environments, with a profound understanding of Compute, Storage, and Network services.
- Deep and demonstrable expertise in architecting, deploying, and managing production-grade Kubernetes clusters. This includes advanced knowledge of Kubernetes internals, networking (CNI), storage (CSI), security, and scaling strategies, leveraging Kubernetes-native and cloud-native technologies for sophisticated application lifecycle management.
- Proven experience in developing and maintaining comprehensive observability platforms, leveraging analytical skills to derive insights from metrics, logs, and traces using technologies such as Splunk or ELK stack, Grafana, Prometheus, and Alertmanager.
- Demonstrated ability to architect, implement, and manage robust CI/CD pipelines, with hands-on experience using Jenkins or similar automation servers to facilitate rapid, reliable, and automated software delivery across diverse environments.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex distributed systems, identify root causes, and implement effective, long-term solutions, including active participation in on-call rotations and post-incident analysis.
- Proficiency in Linux Shell Scripting, Python, and Go for advanced platform automation, tooling development, and infrastructure management.
- Proven track record of designing and implementing highly reliable, scalable, and secure Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using tools like Terraform.
- Expertise in cloud architecture principles
- Exceptional collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to partner effectively with distributed teams of software engineers, quality engineers, and other SREs to gather requirements, define technical specifications, and drive the implementation of critical platform features
- Familiarity with distributed data persistence technologies such as Cassandra, MongoDB, Couchbase, or cloud-native storage solutions like AWS S3, and their integration into a Kubernetes ecosystem
- Experience in building and optimizing platforms that support the deployment and operation of diverse application runtimes, including Java, within containerized environments
- Deep understanding of core networking protocols (DNS, TCP, HTTP/HTTPS) and their implications for designing high-performance, secure, and scalable cloud-native platforms
- BS or MS in Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience in a highly technical platform engineering role.
