When you order a package on Amazon, Last Mile Operations is in charge of the final delivery to your home. Central Operations' mandate is to centralize all tasks that can be centralized across Japan's 200+ last mile node network. Thanks to CO, tasks can be standardized, optimized and automated, resulting in better delivery experience for customers, at a lower cost. Strategically, the team allows JP Ops to grow by double digits every year, without increasing complexity and cost at the same rate.
As a Senior Manager (manager of managers) in Central Ops, you are in charge of a team that runs one of the key functions of the organization:
1. Intraweek Planning (managing physical capacity in our sites and virtual capacity in our systems, from W-1 planning to D0 execution)
2. Launching new business initiatives (e.g. Quick Commerce, Sub-sameday), leveraging what we learned from the existing business, to accelerate time to market and build the new business in a scalable way
3. Perfecting execution on the day of delivery: defining the right real-time interventions, automations and feedback loops to planning, to ensure customers receive their packages when expected.
4. Overseeing all our Operations: CO is a 24/7 operations, which requires shift management of a large group of operators. You ensure this operation delivers high quality, and improves productivity over time
Key job responsibilities
Cross-functional leadership & influence: You drive alignment across planning, operations, and technology teams, influencing resource allocation, process design, and roadmap priorities with stakeholders up to Director level. You represent the organization in business reviews.
Strategy to execution: You define the strategic direction for your function and contribute to the broader organizational strategy. You translate long-term vision into quarterly priorities, making deliberate trade-offs across a broad portfolio of initiatives. You own metric definition, goal setting, and day-to-day execution accountability. You partner directly with technology teams to ensure the automation roadmap is aligned with business strategy and delivers measurable impact.
People leadership at scale: You build and develop a multi-layered organization, hiring senior talent, coaching managers, establishing team mechanisms, and cultivating a culture of ownership, operational excellence, and continuous improvement. Developing the next generation of leaders is a core part of the role.
Delivery & mechanisms: You own delivery accountability for critical programs, ensuring resourcing, sequencing, dependencies, and escalation paths are clear and visible to senior leadership. You build repeatable operating mechanisms (planning cycles, review cadences, escalation frameworks) that scale beyond individual effort.
