Are you inspired by invention? Is problem solving through teamwork in your DNA? We apply advances in robotics and software to solve real-world problems that enhance our customers' experience in ways we cannot even imagine yet. Amazon Robotics is located in the greater Boston area, the epicenter of robotics innovation. Our diverse team of engineers comes from all over the world to design, test, and build our dynamic fleet of robots and mechatronic systems. Having our offices, labs, test floors, and factories all co-located means that we can design the hardware, write the code, test, build, and watch it all come to life. This allows us to innovate quickly and on limitless ideas. Current advancements are underway in autonomous movement and mobility, artificial intelligence and machine learning, manipulation, simulation, robotic management software, predictive analytics, and much more.
The Amazon Robotics (AR) organization develops and oversees testing of high-quality robotics using automated solutions. It is a fast-paced operation that works cross-functionally with teams across Amazon globally, and embraces multi-talented, hardworking, technology-driven individuals. In this role, you will act as a Sustaining Test Development Engineer, accountable for developing, supporting, troubleshooting, and continuously improving the manufacturing test systems that sustain our production lines across internal factories and contract manufacturing (CM) sites.
This position primarily focuses on test development and sustaining engineering for electro-mechanical sub-assemblies, including printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs), sensors, and vision systems. You will maintain test station uptime, investigate failures to root cause, and optimize automated test solutions to drive improvements in product yield, test coverage, and reliability. We are seeking a creative and detail-oriented engineer with a proven track record of sustaining automated test systems in a High-Volume Manufacturing environment. This role reports to the Product Sustaining and Support Engineering team within Amazon Robotics.
Key job responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain manufacturing test software using Python, LabVIEW, and NI TestStand for automated test execution across multiple product lines
- Develop and integrate test sequences in NI TestStand for production-level functional, parametric, and calibration testing
- Create and maintain custom test fixture designs, interface boards, and wiring harnesses for DUT connectivity
- Develop instrument control drivers and DUT communication APIs using Python, LabVIEW, and/or C/C++
- Partner with product design teams to define Design for Testability (DFT) requirements and implement test strategies from NPI through volume production
- Analyze test data, establish statistical pass/fail limits, and drive yield improvements using SPC, GR&R, and Cp/Cpk methodologies
- Debug and troubleshoot complex test failures spanning software, firmware, hardware, and mechanical interfaces; assist manufacturing in resolving production issues
- Document test procedures, specifications, software design documents, and acceptance criteria
- Propose design changes that enhance product manufacturability and testability; evaluate and approve electro-mechanical ECOs
- Aide End of Line (EOL) test stations at local contract manufacturers and system integrators
- Review industry trends and new test equipment to ensure methods are current
- Develop or implement manufacturing test strategies and solutions for robotic manipulation applications
- Promote a safe working environment and foster an open team culture
A day in the life
You'll work in a fast-paced environment, partnering cross-functionally with teams across Amazon globally. Your daily activities will vary between hands-on technical work and strategic partnership. You might start the morning troubleshooting a test failure by analyzing logs and probing hardware interfaces, then transition to developing Python or LabVIEW code for a new test sequence using TestStand. In the afternoon, you could be reviewing electrical schematics with product design engineers to define DFT requirements for an upcoming NPI program, or performing statistical analysis on yield data to identify trends and drive improvements.
Other days, you'll design custom test fixture interfaces, validate instrument communication drivers, coordinate with contract manufacturers on test station deployment, or assist production teams in resolving escalated test issues. You'll participate in design reviews, contribute to documentation, and provide input on engineering change orders that improve manufacturability.
This is a small, specialized team where ownership is high and impact is immediate. You'll contribute across the full stack, from fixture hardware design through software development and production support.
Amazon offers a full range of benefits that support you and eligible family members, including domestic partners.
