Amazon Japan's Legal Department is looking for a talented bilingual (JP & ENG) attorney to fill the position of Associate Corporate Counsel or Corporate Counsel.
(Depending on experience - minimum 2 years+ of Post-Qualification Experience (PQE) required).
This lawyer will be based in Amazon Japan’s Meguro headquarters, together with the Amazon Japan legal team. Compensation is based on experience and includes equity compensation in the form of Restricted Stock Units.

Key job responsibilities
This attorney will support Amazon’s e-commerce business in, amongst others: conducting vendor negotiations; leading negotiations for daily and complex commercial contracts; negotiating consumer issues; advising on regulated products; providing day-to-day corporate and business law counseling; administering and resolving legal issues that arise in existing commercial relationships; providing legal review of advertisements, promotions and marketing; and conducting reviews of procedural and regulatory compliance issues.
The candidate also will be expected to participate in other Amazon legal projects as directed, including the administration and resolution of legal issues that arise in existing commercial relationships and handling pre-litigation legal disputes and inquiries.
About the team
The successful candidate will report to a long-term Senior Corporate Counsel who has been working for Amazon Japan Legal for more than 7 years and who reports to the Japan Legal Vice President.
Basic Qualifications
- Law degree (J.D. or equivalent) from a leading university and law school.
- Licensed to practice law in Japan and/or the United States or other common law jurisdiction.
- Approximately 5+ years of legal experience (with several years of experience at a leading global law firm and/or in-house at a major multinational corporation).
- Outstanding legal and business judgment, drafting, negotiation, analytical, management and leadership skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to act as a business partner to senior management and clients of all levels.
- Native Level Japanese and Business Level English (have ability to communicate orally and in writing, draft agreements and negotiate in Japanese and English.)
Preferred Qualifications
- Law firm experience and In-house experience at an international corporation or a retail or e-commerce company.
- Experience working with the Japanese regulators.
- Familiarity with Japan’s regulatory landscape.
