We are seeking a motivated Hardware Development Engineer I (HDE I) to contribute to the research, design, and development of electrical and controls sub-components for material handling systems within One MHS (One Material Handling Systems). In this entry-level role, you will solve straightforward hardware-related engineering problems with guidance from senior team members, gaining hands-on experience in power distribution, controls design, and industrial communication protocols. As part of OneMHS, you will help shape how we design, build, and operate material handling capabilities through electrical and controls engineering.
The ideal candidate will have a broad knowledge of engineering concepts (first-order analysis, electrical and mechanical systems, data analysis, systems modelling) and foundational understanding of the hardware manufacturing process. You will work closely with cross-functional teams including mechanical engineering, software, and project management to deliver quality electrical and controls sub-component designs while learning industry standards and best practices.
This role is ideal for an engineer early in their career who is passionate about customer-focused design, eager to learn end-to-end product and system knowledge, and ready to contribute quality artefacts including design schematics, component drawings, bill of materials, and trade studies.
Key job responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
Electrical Sub-Component Design & Development
Assist in the design of electrical sub-components for power and controls systems related to MH projects, including 3-phase and single-phase power distribution elements
Support development of electrical layouts, schematics, and panel designs under guidance from senior engineers
Design hardware sub-components that match defined specifications and requirements, incorporating PCB layout best practices and EMI/EMC compliance considerations
Learn and apply modular and scalable design principles that prioritize reliability, maintainability, and performance
Develop component and assembly drawings, bill of materials, and supporting documentation using CAD modelling software (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, SolidWorks)
Controls Engineering & Prototyping
Support the design and implementation of industrial communication networks utilizing EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP, and PROFINET protocols under senior engineer guidance
Assist in developing control system architectures incorporating IPCs, PLCs, and SCADA systems
Learn to specify, configure, and integrate Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and associated interfaces within material handling systems
Assist in the selection, specification, and integration of sensors, encoders, safety circuits, and safety devices in accordance with applicable safety standards
Build and test prototypes of electrical and controls sub-components to validate designs against specifications
Design Validation, Supplier Coordination & Compliance
Evaluate designs through analysis and testing; troubleshoot, research root causes, and resolve defects when problems arise
Work with suppliers to understand feasibility of fabrication and manufacturing (DFM, tolerance analysis)
Assist the team in making trade-off decisions regarding materials, availability, and cost
Support compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) / NFPA 70 and other applicable standards
Research how proposed solutions impact the product (cost, functionality, quality, durability, performance) and communicate findings to stakeholders
Collaboration, Documentation & Learning
Work effectively with product managers, engineering peers, and other internal partners on team and product design discussions
Get designs reviewed and appropriately refine them to meet requirements; escalate risks or problems in solutions or project plans
Clearly document research, design alternatives considered, and reasons for rejection so future engineers understand your solutions
Communicate professionally with your team and other teams, knowing when to contribute and when to listen
Participate in intern interviews and help train interns about the team's mission, procedures, and products
A day in the life
Work alongside senior engineers to design electrical and controls sub-components for material handling projects. Spend time learning about the product end-to-end — reviewing specifications, prototypes, and documentation. Use CAD tools to develop component drawings and schematics that match defined requirements. Collaborate with suppliers to understand manufacturing feasibility and assist the team in trade-off decisions. Get your designs reviewed, refine based on feedback, and validate through analysis and testing. Document your research and design decisions clearly. Participate in team design discussions, scoping meetings, and intern interviews while building your foundational engineering skills in a supportive, innovation-driven environment
