Amazon EC2 Mac enables customers to run macOS workloads on demand in the cloud. The EC2 Mac team sits within EC2 Nitro, providing the engineering solutions that bring Apple's latest Mac mini and Mac Studio hardware to AWS. To accomplish this, the team owns integration of Apple hardware with the EC2 Nitro System, the public macOS images customers build on, and the control plane and operations that keep the product running.
As a Software Development Engineer on the team, you will build and operate software solutions spanning all of these areas. You will work across teams and organizations to continuously make the existing offerings better for customers and to bring the next generation of Mac computing to AWS.
You will own problems end to end in an environment where the path forward is often unclear, investigating issues independently and delivering solutions from design through implementation to production. Your work shapes how developers around the world use Apple hardware at scale.
Key job responsibilities
- Design and implement software across the full development lifecycle (requirements, design, coding, testing, deployment, and operational support) for EC2 Mac.
- Own areas of the product, including Apple hardware integration with EC2 Nitro, the public macOS images customers build on, and control plane services, keeping them highly available and performant for customer workloads.
- Investigate and resolve issues end to end, tracing problems across software and system layers even when there is no established runbook.
- Drive operational excellence by participating in on-call rotations, identifying root causes, and implementing permanent solutions that improve system reliability.
- Review code and mentor teammates, helping engineers on the team grow, and document how the software works so others can maintain and extend it.
A day in the life
Most days you are building and operating the software behind EC2 Mac, then shifting to whatever the product needs that day. You might trace a failure that starts in software and ends in Apple hardware or the Nitro integration, dig into a fleet issue with the control plane, or meet with partner teams to shape how a new Mac platform comes to AWS. The work often reaches beyond software into operations and hardware, where the path forward is not yet defined.
About the team
The EC2 Mac team sits within EC2 Nitro and owns making the EC2 Mac product work in the cloud, from integrating Apple hardware with the Nitro System to the macOS images and control plane that customers rely on. It is a single product with clear visibility, and the team is accountable for meeting customers' needs across day-to-day operations, roadmap planning, and everything in between. The team works closely together, across many cross-functional organizations, and broadly within EC2 to make this unique hardware viable in the cloud.
