Application deadline: Aug 1, 2026
AWS runs one of the largest SSD fleets on the planet. The OEM SSD team in Hardware Engineering Services owns the full lifecycle of these drives across EC2 platforms, from qualification through firmware updates to end-of-life. We are looking for a Senior SDE to build the software services that make that lifecycle faster, more automated, and more reliable. You will design and ship production services that replace manual workflows at a scale of millions of drives and thousands of firmware combinations.
Key job responsibilities
Contribute to a multi-year automation roadmap aimed at replacing manual workflows with scalable, reliable services.
Build SSD qualification and fleet management solutions that improve drive health and reliability across EC2, EBS, and S3 platforms, partnering with software and hardware teams
Own end-to-end service development: requirements, design docs, implementation, testing, deployment, and operational runbooks.
Use agentic AI-powered coding and design tools daily to accelerate prototyping, testing, and code delivery.
A day in the life
You will use agentic AI-powered coding and design tools to build and ship services that manage SSD health across the AWS fleet. Your work spans the full SSD lifecycle: designing qualification frameworks, building drive log collection services, analyzing fleet-wide telemetry data, and driving SSD firmware fixes from root cause to production deployment. The SSD landscape is evolving fast, driven by GenAI server architectures, GPU direct-attached storage, and next-generation PCIe interfaces. You will help shape how we tackle these challenges with software. The team is small, experienced, and collaborative. We share context in standups, pair on hard problems, and make decisions quickly without layers of process. You will have real ownership and direct impact at AWS scale.
About the team
The OEM SSD team sits within AWS Hardware Engineering Services and is responsible for every OEM solid-state drive in the AWS fleet. That is multi-million drives, across multi-million hosts, from multiple OEM major vendors. We qualify new drives, manage firmware lifecycles, monitor drive health, and build the automation to do all of it at scale. The team is a mix of hardware engineers and software engineers who work closely together. We are in Cupertino, Seattle, and Denver, and we operate with a startup feel inside AWS: small team, big problems, direct impact.
Basic Qualifications
- 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience
- 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
- 7+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Strong understanding or motivation to learn drive (SSD and/or HDD) technologies
