Job Description AECOM is seeking an
Intermediate Geotechnical / Permafrost Engineer to support geotechnical and permafrost engineering projects across Western and Northern Canada. The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team delivering services for transportation, water, mining, energy, infrastructure, and northern development projects. This role will involve planning and executing geotechnical investigations, permafrost characterization and assessment, foundation engineering, earthworks design, and construction support services. The successful candidate will contribute to both field and office activities and will have opportunities to work on complex projects in Arctic and sub-Arctic environments. Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and execute geotechnical and permafrost site investigations.
- Analyze geotechnical and permafrost field and laboratory data.
- Prepare geotechnical interpretive reports, engineering analyses, and design recommendations.
- Conduct thermal and geotechnical assessments for infrastructure in cold regions.
- Evaluate geohazards associated with permafrost degradation, thaw settlement, frost heave, slope instability, and climate change impacts.
- Develop foundation, embankment, road, airfield, and earth structure recommendations for northern infrastructure projects.
- Support the design of mitigation measures for permafrost-related risks.
- Coordinate and oversee drilling, instrumentation installation, and field testing programs.
- Perform site inspections and provide construction monitoring and quality assurance services.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including civil, environmental, hydrotechnical, transportation, and structural engineers.
- Assist with proposal preparation, project planning, budgeting, and client communication.
- Mentor junior staff and provide technical guidance as required.
- Travel periodically to remote and northern project locations.
Qualifications Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or Geotechnical Engineering.
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada, or eligible for registration within a reasonable timeframe.
- 6 years of relevant geotechnical engineering experience.
- Experience conducting and interpreting geotechnical investigations.
- Strong technical writing and communication skills.
- Experience working with drilling contractors and managing field programs.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree specializing in Geotechnical Engineering and/or Cold Regions Engineering.
- Experience with permafrost investigations and cold regions engineering.
- Familiarity with northern infrastructure projects in Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, northern British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, or Manitoba.
- Knowledge of thermal monitoring systems, thermistor installations, and permafrost instrumentation.
- Experience assessing thaw settlement, frost heave, and permafrost-related geohazards.
- Understanding of climate resilience and adaptation measures for northern infrastructure.
- Experience using geotechnical software for settlement, slope stability, and thermal analyses.
- Project management and client-facing experience.
