Job Description The Rock Mechanics Specialist will be responsible for the review, validation, and technical support related to the design, construction, and operation of underground works in rock environments. The role involves coordinating technical activities across disciplines, performing engineering analyses, supporting construction teams, and ensuring compliance with project requirements and standards on major tunnel and metro projects.
Key Responsibilities- Review, comment on, and validate contractors’ technical deliverables, including calculation reports and construction drawings.
- Perform independent design verifications (back-checks) of engineering work related to rock mechanics and underground structures.
- Provide technical support during excavation and ground support activities and assist in resolving construction-related issues.
- Analyze rock mass behavior and ground movements, and review associated technical reports.
- Coordinate geotechnical, geological, and structural engineering inputs across disciplines.
- Evaluate change requests and Engineering Directives (EDs).
- Participate in technical meetings with contractors and project stakeholders.
- Contribute to the development and enhancement of technical specifications related to ground support systems, rock bolting, shotcrete, anchors, geotechnical instrumentation, and other associated underground works.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications- University degree in a related field.
- More than 4 years of experience in the design, construction, or operation of tunnels excavated using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs).
- Strong understanding of geotechnical and structural engineering principles as applied to tunneling projects.
- Experience reviewing and validating technical deliverables, including calculation reports, drawings, and technical reports.
- Ability to effectively coordinate and communicate with multiple disciplines and project teams.
- Proficiency with relevant engineering software and computer applications.
Preferred Qualifications- More than 10 years of experience on major tunnel or metro projects involving TBMs.
- Experience in the analysis of TBM-induced ground settlements and the management of complex construction challenges.
- In-depth knowledge of tunnel design codes, standards, and industry best practices.
